Night Shift Possible Cancer Risk

April 2nd, 2008

The following was taken from the end of a newpaper article written by MARIA CHENG of the Associated Press titled ‘WORKING THE NIGHT SHIFT THE NEWEST CANCER RISK? ‘GRAVEYARD’ HOURS TO JOIN GROUP’S LIST OF ‘PROBABLE’ CARCINOGENS’.

SEEING THE LIGHT
Scientists theorize that night workers have a greater risk for cancer because it is so hard — or even rare — for them to get enough sleep in the darkness their bodies need.
– * The hormone melatonin, which is believed to fight tumor growth, only develops during darkness.
– * Melatonin supplements are not advised as a remedy, since they may hinder the body’s ability to produce the hormone naturally.
– * Even worse than working night shifts is fluctuating between night and day work.
– * Night workers can help themselves by getting as much daily rest as possible in a darkened room.

– * How many people might be affected? As many as 20 percent of workers in the developed world.

I am not sure if this is true or not but I do know working night shift has to be managed or it will affect your life in a negative way.

Catch Phrase Brainstorming

April 2nd, 2008

Below is list of catch phrases that were created attempting to come up with someway of conveying the messege of Shift Shade on a billboard.  For your viewing pleasure they have not been edited or changed but copied and pasted from the original list.   I will admit some are pretty silly but this was brainstorming and we are blogging!!!  Please feel free to add your own!

  • Turn day into night
  • Sleep all day
  • Total darkness for daytime sleep
  • Pitch black darkness for great sleep
  • Create a cave in your bedroom
  • Enter…The bat cave
  • Dark as the inside of a cow (Cleve’s comment after I gave him an in home demonstration)
  • Are my eyes open?
  • Too dark to sleep
  • Scary dark
  • Darker than night
  • For a good night sleep, all day (slogan on cards/web site)
  • Darkness to sleep by
  • You don’t know darkness
  • You haven’t seen dark
  • Yea, it’s that dark
  • Artificial darkness
  • Artificial night
  • For a good days sleep
  • Ready, Set, Sleep
  • Never lose a good days sleep again
  • Best daytime sleep you will ever get
  • Work all night, sleep all day
  • Up all night, sleep all day

I never did use any of these on a billboard!  Decided it was to difficult to get the idea of daytime darkness across to someone driving down an interstate.

Quote from Cleve

April 2nd, 2008

The following quote is when I was in the early development stages for the most effective rod configuration and giving my oldest brother Cleve a demonstration.  After I installed the shade in his daughter’s window, shut the door and cut the light out, the first words out of his mouth were “it is darker than the inside of a cow“!

I have been holding on to this knowing I had to use it somewhere.  Almost used it as a testimonial but coming from my brother I did not think that was appropiate.

I don’t know how dark a cow’s insides are or how he would know, but I would have to imagine it is pretty dark!

Night After Night Shift

March 15th, 2008

Good morning,

It is 4am and I’ve been wide awake since 2am.  Got off work Fri morning at 7am after (4) 12 hour shifts.  When I got off, I slept until noon, trying not to sleep too long so I could sleep tonight (that worked well)!  As I sit hear watching sportscenter and type this blog, I am trying to decide on how I want this blog thing to work.  I want it to be about managing Shift Work.  Maybe identifying the negatives and discuss what works for us.  Anyway, I am going back to bed and toss and turn some more, got to be at ballfield with 7 year old son in the morning!

Shift Shade Pro Staff

March 5th, 2008

I want to introduce the entire Shift Shade Pro Staff, Blake “Scoot” Hodge.  Blake is the “2007 Sportsman’s Warehouse Columbia, SC Junior Duck Calling Champion” and the “2008 SC State Junior Duck Calling Champion”.  He is going to Stuttgart, AR this November to compete in the Junior World Championship!!!

Scoot is a determined 12 year old that excels in academics (straight A’s), sports (football and baseball) and the obvious, duck calling!  He has been nominated to the “Who’s Who Among Students” the last 3 years.  Blake is also a polite and thoughtful person.  His accomplishments are proof that hard work pays off!!

We are very proud of Blake and honored that he wears our Shift Shade Logo!!  We wish him continued success and will keep you posted on the Shift Shade Blog of his accomplishments.

Since his dad (Daryl) is looking over my shoulder as I type, I will mention him also.  He is Scoot’s biggest fan and puts a lot of energy in supporting Blake in all of his activities.  To be a world class duck caller it takes a tremendous amount of determination, time and desire.  Scoot and his dad practice every day.

Blogging 101

February 20th, 2008

VERY EXCITING!!  The first entry in my new blog!  I am not exactly sure what a blog is but the best I can figure is a place to put whatever you want?  My plans for this blog are to post things dealing with Shift Shade.  I have a lot of pictures to post and information that will help potential customers decide on whether Shift Shade is the right product for them.  If you are in the market for a window treatment then Shift Shade is probably not your product.  If you are in search of TOTAL DAYTIME DARKNESS then Shift Shade is your product.  I will explain later how Shift Shade works, how the idea evolved and anthing else you may want to know about Shift Shade.

Welcome

February 18th, 2008

This is a place to discuss my product ShiftShade along with info on shift work and day sleeping. Thanks for stopping by.
